Captain American is not a lawful renewal, because it is after the 27th year. According to US law the owner has ONE year for renewal within the start of the 27th year. It goes by entrance date and Not calendar year (ie. Jan 1). the renewal posted for CA is 28th year. Check out copyright renewals on the net. I posted one link many moons ago.

Furthermore, Video cellar was asked about early and late renewals to which he could find no support either. Check out the renewal date on the net.

Golan v Gonzalez case (unless it is a hoax) demostrates the copyright office is not above the law. In other words it is the law, not the copyright office which makes it lawful renewal.

The renewal window was far more complicated before the 1976 copyright act came into force. For a film to be timely renewed, it had to be renewed between the 27th and 28th anniversary of the calendar day of registration based on the year in notice not the year of registration.

For Capt America, some films contain a 1943 and some a 1944 date in notice. The renewal time limits would be:
Eps 1-3 were reg'd 31 Dec 43 and needed to be renewed between 31 Dec 70 and 31 Dec 71 (1943 Notices)
Eps 4-10 were reg'd 23 Feb 44 and needed ro be renewed between 23 Feb 71 and 23 Feb 72 (1944 Notices)
Eps 11-15 were reg'd 5 Feb 1944 and needed to be renewed between 5 Feb 71 and 5 Feb 72 (1944 notices)

After 1978, the renewal limit became the end of year for the 28th calendar year after the date in notice.

71 - 44 = 27

The renewal was made less than 28 years after the original registration.

Assuming that a year is 365.25 days:

irb(main):010:0> (Date.parse('2Aug1971') - Date.parse('5Feb1944'))/365.25
=> 27.4880219028063

The renewal was made 27.49 years after the original registration.
